The Missing Experience

The New English

Sometimes the hardest part of counseling is being present with my own grief, as I mourn the loss of the English language as I know it.

Change is hard, right?

Long before they died, my parents pointed me to the holy offerings of William Safire.

Safire wrote a Sunday column, On Language, which started appearing in The New York Times Magazine starting in 1979 and which ran for many years.

He had a pet peeve about the way some nouns were being used as verbs.

Yes, I know, language is a living evolution.

Like everyone, I have different sides. Counselor, photographer, writer, cooker of food – both spicy and plain, and seeker of truth and happiness. I have always taken an interest in the unassuming things that pass us by – both heard and seen, both ordinary and not so ordinary. They are all sacred and beautiful in some way.
